  the critical health status of indigenous people in different parts of the
  country, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)&nbsp;proposed a holist=
ic
  approach for reducing the burden of disease among these people. On </span=

  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt'><ns0:date ns1:Year=3D"2010" ns1:Day=3D"9" ns1:=
Month=3D"8"><span
   style=3D'color:white'>9<sup>th</sup> August 2010</span></ns0:date><span
  style=3D'color:white'> , the International Day of the World's indigenous
  people, ICMR initiated a Tribal Health Research Forum (THRF) with the man=
date
  to address and discuss all the health issues pertaining to indigenous peo=
ple.
  This forum meet once in every three months to look into the progress made=
 and
  develop modus operandi to meet challenges of health problems of the
  indigenous people.<u2:p> </span></span><o:p></o:p></p>
  </u2:p>
  <p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-a=
lt:auto;

  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt;color:white'>Indian tribal people, locally know=
n as
  the <span class=3DSpellE>Adivasi</span>, are the aboriginal people of the
  nation and constitute a larger part of population of the country. These
  communities belong to different ethno-lingual groups and living at dispar=
ate
  levels of socio-economic development. Their spatial distribution is
  characterized by a tendency of clustering and concentration in pockets wh=
ich
  have suffered from isolation. Article 366(25) refers to scheduled tribes =
as
  those communities who are scheduled in accordance with Article 342 of the
  Constitution. According to census of </span><st1:country-region w:st=3D"o=
n"><span
   style=3D'font-size:13.5pt'><ns0:place><ns0:country-region><st1:country-r=
egion
     w:st=3D"on"><st1:place w:st=3D"on"><span style=3D'color:white'>India</=
span></st1:place></st1:country-region></ns0:country-region></ns0:place></sp=
an></st1:country-region><span
  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt;color:white'> , 2001, the Scheduled Tribes are =
the
  tribes or tribal communities or part of or groups within these tribes and
  tribal communities which have been declared as such by the President thro=
ugh
  a public notification. The tribal population of the country, as per the 2=
001
  census, is 8.43 <span class=3DSpellE>crore</span>, constituting 8.2% of t=
he
  total population with 91.7% of them living in rural areas and 8.3% in urb=
an
  areas. The tribal population accounts for 8.2% population (Indian Census
  2011). According to Article 342 of the </span><span style=3D'font-size:13=
.5pt;
  mso-bidi-font-weight:bold'>constitution of India</span><span
  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt;color:white'>, at present, there are 697 tribes=
 as
  counted by the Central Government. Of which certain Scheduled Tribes, 75 =
in
  number known as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups classified as Primi=
tive
  Tribal Groups (<span class=3DSpellE>PTGs</span>). Some of the primitive t=
ribes
  are <span class=3DSpellE>Abujmaria</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Bodo</spa=
n>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Bondo</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Birhore</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Baiga</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Kamar</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Saharia</span> and <span class=3DSpellE>Onges</span> etc. =
Three
  numerically dominant tribes in </span><st1:country-region w:st=3D"on"><st=
1:place
   w:st=3D"on"><span style=3D'font-size:13.5pt'><ns0:place><ns0:country-reg=
ion><span
      style=3D'color:white'>India</span></ns0:country-region></ns0:place></=
span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span
  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt;color:white'> are <span class=3DSpellE>Gond</sp=
an>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Bhil</span> and <span class=3DSpellE>Santhal</span>. <span
  class=3DSpellE>Gond</span> &amp; <span class=3DSpellE>Bhil</span> are
  predominantly distributed in Central and Western India, whereas <span
  class=3DSpellE>Santhal</span> are distributed in Eastern part of the coun=
try,
  predominantly in Bihar, </span><span style=3D'font-size:13.5pt'><ns0:plac=
e><st1:place
   w:st=3D"on"><span style=3D'color:white'>West Bengal</span></st1:place></=
ns0:place><span
  style=3D'color:white'> , <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3DGramE>Orissa<=
/span></span>
  &amp; <span class=3DSpellE>Jharkhand</span>. In North Eastern part of the
  country, the main tribes are <span class=3DSpellE>Naga</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Mijo</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Garo</span>, <span class=
=3DSpellE>Khasi</span>,
  <span class=3DSpellE>Chakma</span> etc., and are found mostly and predomi=
nantly
  in the state of <span class=3DSpellE>Nagaland</span>, <span class=3DSpell=
E>Meghalaya</span>,
  <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3DGramE>Mijoram</span></span> &amp; <span
  class=3DSpellE>Arunachal</span> Pradesh. In this North Eastern part of th=
e country,
  even if, these tribes are numerically small groups but their share in the
  state population is more than 50 percent. There are five numerically small
  tribes located in the <span class=3DSpellE>Andman</span> &amp; </span><st=
1:place
  w:st=3D"on"><ns0:place><span class=3DSpellE><span style=3D'color:white'>N=
icobar</span></span><span
    style=3D'color:white'> islands</span></ns0:place></st1:place><span
  style=3D'color:white'> are <span class=3DSpellE>Jarwas</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Onges</span>, <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3Dcontent>S=
entinelese</span></span>,
  <span class=3DSpellE><span class=3Dcontent>Shompens</span></span> &amp; t=
he <span
  class=3DSpellE><span class=3Dcontent>Andamanese</span></span> / <span
  class=3DSpellE>Nicobaries</span> with an anthropological links to the <sp=
an
  class=3DSpellE><span style=3D'mso-bidi-font-weight:bold'>Negrito</span></=
span>
  group. Central and Northern part of the country is the home of the tribes
  like <span class=3DSpellE>Gaddies</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Bhotia</sp=
an>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Kamar</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Birhore</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Jaunsaris</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Baiga</span>, <span
  class=3DSpellE>Khampa</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Meena</span> and <span
  class=3DSpellE>Gujjar</span> etc. In Southern part of the country some of=
 the
  tribal groups are <span class=3DSpellE>Andh</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>=
Chenchu</span>,
  <span class=3DSpellE>Dubla</span>, <span class=3DSpellE>Gadabas</span>, <=
span
  class=3DSpellE>Kolam</span> and <span class=3DSpellE>Todas</span> etc.<u2=

  communicable diseases like Tuberculosis, Malaria, Dengue, <span class=3DS=
pellE>Chikungunya</span>,
  Lymphatic <span class=3DSpellE>Filariasis</span> and Diarrhea and non
  communicable diseases as Hypertension, <span class=3DSpellE>Fluorosis</sp=
an>,
  Cancer, Nutritional deficiency disorders and genetic disorders etc are ma=
jor
  health problems in these tribes. Presence of these diseases coupled with
  illiteracy, poverty and malnutrition makes the situation more complex and
  tedious to the tribal group as well to the health functionaries to bring =
them
  to main stream so as to reach the targets of Millennium Development Goals=
 (</span><span
  style=3D'font-size:13.5pt'><ns0:stockticker><span style=3D'color:white'> =
MDG</span></ns0:stockticker><span
  style=3D'color:white'> ). </span></span><o:p></o:p></p>

  <p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-a=

  text-align:justify'><span style=3D'font-size:13.5pt;color:white'>The epid=
emic
  of diseases and their risk factors is affecting all population of the cou=
ntry
  and with the ongoing epidemiological transition, even marginalized popula=
tion
  are getting affected. Studies in the tribal population would provide us w=
ith
  an opportunity to capture this transition as well as understand the
  behavioral determinants of the risk factor selecting appropriate evidence
  based intervention. The Tribal Health Forum provides us an opportunity for
  strengthening research on tribal population and interacting with key stake
  holders.<u2:p> </span><o:p></o:p></p>

  <p class=3DMsoNormal style=3D'mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-a=

  class=3DSpellE>Katoch</span>, Secretary DHR and Director General ICMR is =
of
  opinion that there is need for taking up research which would make a posi=
tive
  difference in the health of the tribal population as a total health packa=
ge
  irrespective of specialties in the shortest possible time. The outcome of
  research should include public health indicators so as to assess impact of
  research, involvement of local medical colleges, universities, other rese=
arch
  organization and the state authorities is critical for under taking resea=
rch
  and making an impact.<u2:p> </span></p>
